35 – ʿAbd Allah b. Muhammad b. ʿUbayd reported: Bishr b. al-Walid al-Kindi narrated to us; he said: Muhammad b. Talhah narrated to us, from Zubayd, from Mujahid, who said:
Iblis has five children, and he has assigned each one of them to oversee a particular task of his. He then named them: Thabr, al-Aʿwar, Miswāt, Dāsim, and Zalambur.
Thabr is in charge of calamities; he commands wailing, tearing the collar, slapping the cheeks, and the calls of jāhiliyya (pre-Islamic tribal pride).
Al-Aʿwar is in charge of fornication; he orders it and promotes it.
Miswāt is in charge of lying. He listens, then meets a man and conveys a report to him; the man goes to a group and says, “I saw a man whose face I recognize, though I do not know his name, who told me such-and-such.”
Dāsim is the one who enters with a man into his household, points out their faults, and enrages him against them.
Zalambur is in charge of the marketplace; he plants his banner in the market.
