Maka'id al-ShaytanIbn Abi al-Dunya

69 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā reported:

A devil would come to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—holding a blazing torch of fire. He would stand before him while he was praying, and the Prophet would rise and seek refuge, yet the devil would not leave. Then Gabriel—peace be upon him—came to him and said, “Say: ‘I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can overstep, from the evil of all that enters the earth and all that comes forth from it, all that descends from the sky and all that ascends therein, and from the trials of night and day.’” When he recited it, the devil’s flame was extinguished and he fell flat on his face.
