61 – Abu Bakr ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yunus narrated to us; Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah narrated, saying: ʿAmr ibn Dinar heard that ʿUrwah ibn ʿAmir heard ʿUbayd ibn Rifaʿah trace it back to the Prophet ﷺ who said:
“There was a monk among the Children of Israel. Satan seized a young woman and throttled her, then cast into the hearts of her family the notion that her remedy lay with the monk. They brought the girl to him, but he refused to take her in. They persisted until he relented, and she remained with him.
“Satan then came to him and seduced him into committing the act with her, and she became pregnant. Later he returned and said, ‘You will now be disgraced; her family will come for her. Kill her, and when they ask, say that she died.’ So the monk killed her and buried her.
“Satan next went to her family, whispered to them, and placed in their hearts that he had impregnated her, killed her, and buried her. They came to the monk and asked about her, and he replied, ‘She has died.’ They seized him. Then Satan came to him and said, ‘I am the one who struck and strangled her; I am the one who instilled this in her family’s hearts; and I am the one who entangled you in all of this. Obey me and you will be saved: prostrate to me twice.’ So he prostrated to him twice.
“He is the one of whom Allah said: ‘Like Satan—when he says to a human being, “Disbelieve!” but when he disbelieves he says, “I wash my hands of you; I fear Allah, Lord of all peoples.”’”
