- Granted you have withheld censure from every disbeliever and from every misguided soul who has strayed from the right path,
- it would then oblige you to ignore every oppressor(1) who wrongs the people(2) in their lives, their property, or their honor;
- so never flare up(3) against a shedder of blood, nor against a thief who steals the possessions of one in dire need,
- nor against a man who assails a protected reputation—however exalted—nor against one who indulges in illicit intercourse out of perverse desire(4);
- nor against anyone who blocks people from their well-trodden road, nor against a corrupter who spreads havoc throughout the land;
- nor against a perjured witness weaving lies and slander, nor against one who hurls accusations of adultery at chaste women(5);
- nor against whoever deliberately destroys crops and livestock, nor against a judge who governs humankind for a bribe;
- rather, muzzle the tongue of blame toward every evildoer, and inflict no punishment on an offender(6).
