with the end of verse 61 of Surah al-Baqarah. The copy is sound at the beginning, but later tends toward abridgment. It was therefore utilized in its opening portion, while its variants were disregarded in the abridged portion. It is designated by the siglum (ر).
On the recto of its first folio is written:
“The first volume of the Exegesis of the Great Quran by the eminent scholar Ibn Jarīr al-Tabarī, may Allah Most High have mercy on him.”
Above it is an ownership inscription that reads:
“Property belongs to Allah Most High. Sold by Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Nāsir; may Allah be his aid. Amen.”
Below it is written:
“I consign to this book the testimony that there is no deity but Allah, and I testify that our master Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Muhammad ibn Mūsā ibn Muhammad ibn Nāsir wrote this—may Allah be with him—in 1183.”
Below it are two seals. One is the seal of the Library of the al-Āsiriyya Zāwiya, and the other is the seal of the General Library in Rabat, bearing the words “Endowment Manuscripts.”
The following page contains a biography of Ibn Jarīr, written in a modern hand unlike that of the rest of the manuscript. The same is true of the page after it and the verso of the third folio. The regular hand begins on the recto of the fourth folio.
It opens:
“In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. It was read before Ibn Jaʿfar—thus it reads—Muhammad ibn Jarīr al-Tabarī, in the year 306.”
It ends:
“The first volume of The Comprehensive Exposition of the Interpretation of the Verses of the Great Quran is complete. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may His blessings and peace be upon Muhammad and his family. Authored by Abū Jaʿfar Muhammad ibn Jarīr ibn Zayd al-Tabarī, may Allah have mercy on him. It is followed by the second volume, Allah Most High willing. It was copied by the servant in need of his Lord’s mercy, Bayān ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Bayān ibn Muhammad al-Hanafī (may Allah have mercy on him), and may He have mercy on his parents and have mercy upon
