Beneath the title is the following endowment inscription:
“In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. May Allah bless our master and lord Muhammad and his family and grant them abundant peace. Our lord the Sultan—the divinely supported, peerless, victorious, and aided Commander of the Muslims, who strives in the path of the Lord of the worlds—our lord Abū Abd Allah Muhammad al-Muntasir bi-Allah, son of our lord Abū Sālim, son of our lord Abū al-Hasan, and scion of our lords, the rightly guided caliphs—may Allah be pleased with them all—has endowed this entire collection of al-Tabarī’s tafsīr 21—I have written this on its second volume—to the library of the al-Khalafāwiyyīn School. May Allah cause it to flourish through knowledge and deeds. It is for the benefit of students of knowledge—may Allah Most High increase their number—and is designated for reading, study, copying, and collation against it, without its being taken outside the aforementioned school and without alteration, substitution, transfer, or reassignment. It is a perpetual endowment for as long as the ages remain and night and day endure, until Allah inherits the earth and all upon it, for He is the best of inheritors. Whoever transgresses, substitutes, or alters shall be called to account and questioned by Allah. In doing so—may Allah Most High strengthen him—he sought the countenance of Almighty Allah and hoped for His abundant reward. Allah does not let the reward of those who do good go to waste. Dated 3 Ramadan 827 AH. May Allah honor us through His generosity and grace.”
Its opening reads:
“In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. Discussion of the interpretation of the words of Allah—majestic is His praise: ‘Wherein are darknesses, thunder, and lightning’ …
[al-Baqarah: 19].”
Its conclusion reads:
“Ibn Jurayj said: If a man took more manna and quails than he needed for that day, it spoiled. However, on Friday they would take the food for Saturday, and it would not be spoiled by morning.”
