Al-Radd ʿalā al-ManṭiqiyyīnIbn Taimiya

In their scheme, the essential property that distinguishes the human being—the specific differentia—is “rational,” whereas the proprium is “laughing.”

The whole discussion, then, rests on the distinction they draw between the essential and the accidental. They maintain that an essential predicate is included within the very reality of the subject—that is, the essential description forms part of the reality of the thing described—whereas an accidental predicate lies outside that reality.

They further say that what is essential is that upon which the reality itself depends, in contrast to the accidental. The accidental, in turn, is divided into the necessary and the adventitious; and the necessary is subdivided into (a) what is necessary to the existence of the quiddity but not to its essence—such as a horse’s shadow or an animal’s death—and (b) what is necessary to the quiddity itself, like evenness for the number four and oddness for the number three.

The difference, they claim, between what is necessary to the quiddity and what is necessary to its existence is that in the latter case one can conceive of the quiddity’s existing without the attribute, whereas in the former it is impossible to conceive of the quiddity’s existing without it.

They also give it a second mark: the essential, they say, is that which is an effect brought about by the quiddity, unlike the mere necessary predicate. They add that among necessary predicates are some whose causal dependence on the quiddity is immediate, while others, according to some of them, are established only through an intermediary. They likewise declare that the essential is what precedes the quiddity both in conception and in extramental existence, whereas the necessary follows it.

Thus they have proposed these three distinctions; yet their own critical scholars have impugned each one and shown that none truly demarcates the essential from the non-essential, as I have set out at length elsewhere.

They may also say that the essential is the constituent of the quiddity that enjoys ontological priority over it—that is, the essential precedes the quiddity and is never conceived as posterior to it.
