Al-Radd ʿalā al-ManṭiqiyyīnIbn Taimiya

…or through a state of inward abstraction akin to the detachment of a sleeper, until the human soul, they imagine, joins the cosmic soul.

The second distinctive quality, in their scheme, is the practical power: a soul so forceful that it can act upon the primordial matter of the world and thereby bring about astounding phenomena.

As for the first quality, it contains two parts: (1) acquiring universal knowledge by means of logical syllogism, and (2) grasping particulars through that supposed contact. Then the faculty of imagination clothes those intelligibles in forms suited to them and imprints them upon the common sense, so a person sees images within himself and hears voices. Those images, according to them, are Allah’s angels, and those voices are the speech of Allah.

Because of such notions, the unbelieving mystics who followed this path—such as Ibn ʿArabī, Ibn Sabʿīn, and others—pursued the same course as the heretics among the Shīʿah, like the authors of the Epistles of the Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ. They adopted whatever they found in the work entitled al-Kutub al-Madnūn bihā ʿalā Ghayr Ahlihā and similar writings that fit these ideas.

As a result, some of them came to maintain that the gate of prophethood is still open and can never be closed, and they would declare—as Ibn Sabʿīn used to say—

“The son of Āminah blundered when he said, ‘There is no prophet after me.’”

Others, wishing to appear more reverent toward the Sacred Law, insist that the gate of prophethood has indeed been shut, yet claim that sainthood (wilāyah) is greater than prophethood. They assert that the Seal of the saints knows Allah better than the Seal of the prophets, and that the latter—indeed all the prophets—derive their knowledge of Allah from the lamp-niche of the Seal of the saints. They further maintain that they equal the Prophet in their understanding of practical rulings, for they behold reality as it truly is and therefore must see it in the same way; nonetheless, they pretend to surpass the Prophet in theoretical truths, because they drink from the very source from which the angel receives what he conveys to the Messenger.
