Allah’s way that never, under any circumstance, is overturned:
The only habit that is never broken is the one about which Allah Himself has declared that it will not be broken, as in His words:
“If the hypocrites, those in whose hearts is a sickness, and the alarm-mongers in Madinah do not desist, We shall surely incite you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors there except for a little—accursed wherever they are found, seized and slain relentlessly. Such has been Allah’s way with those who passed on before, and you will never find any change in Allah’s way.”
(Al-Ahzāb 33:60-62)
He also said:
“If the disbelievers had fought you, they would certainly have turned their backs; then they would find neither protector nor helper. Such is Allah’s way that passed before, and you will never find any change in Allah’s way.”
(Al-Fath 48:22-23)
And He said:
“They swore by Allah, their most solemn oaths, that if a warner were to come to them they would be better guided than any other community. Yet when a warner did come to them it increased them only in aversion—arrogance in the land and scheming evil; but evil scheming engulfs none except its authors. So are they awaiting anything except the pattern of the former peoples? You will never find any change in Allah’s way, nor will you find any deviation in Allah’s way.”
(Fāṭir 35:42-43)
This, then, is Allah’s way—His established custom—in granting victory to His believing servants when they discharge their duty toward the unbelievers, and in taking vengeance and meting out punishment to those unbelievers who, after the messengers had conveyed the message to them, were overtaken by a punishment from Him or by the hands of the believers. It is a way of Allah that has never been found to fail.
As He also said earlier:
“There is no blame on the Prophet concerning what Allah has ordained for him; that is Allah’s way with those who passed before, and Allah’s command is a destiny decreed.”
(Al-Ahzāb 33:38)
Here, He did not add the phrase “you will never find any change,” because this is a legislative norm—known through revelation, not through direct observation—unlike His granting victory to the believers and punishment to those who were warned, for these are matters that can be witnessed, and thus are never seen to be violated.
Some atheists—such as Suhrawardī, who was executed, in his book “The Origin and the Return,” which he entitled “The Imādī Tablets”—sought to derive proof for his unbelief from the Qur’an and the Sunnah, and he argued
