As for His words,
“They will have no food except from ḍarīʿ (a dry, thorny plant),”
the meaning is that in that particular context they will be given nothing to eat but ḍarīʿ, while in another context they will consume Zaqqūm. Hence His statement:
“Indeed, the tree of Zaqqūm will be the food of the sinner.”
This is the very point over which the heretics raised their doubts.1
…The scholars have proposed many answers to this objection; the two that appear strongest to me are the following:
First, punishment is of various kinds and those punished occupy different ranks: some will have no food except ghislin, others none except dari (a thorny, bitter shrub), and others none except the fruit of the tree of zaqqum. This is indicated by His saying: ‘It has seven gates; to each gate is allotted a specific portion of them’ (al-Hijr 15:44).
Second, the purport of all the verses is that they will in fact have no real food at all, for dari does not merit the name “food”—even livestock refuse it, let alone human beings. The same applies to ghislin: whoever’s “food” is dari truly has no food, and whoever’s “food” is ghislin likewise has none. The Arabs illustrate this usage by saying, “So-and-so has no shade except the sun,” or “He rides no mount except the cloth of his garment,” meaning that he has absolutely no shade or mount. On this understanding, the alleged contradiction disappears, and Allah knows best. See Dafʿ Iham al-Idtirab, 10/201.

{لَيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلاَّ مِنْ ضَرِيعٍ}
{إِنَّ شَجَرَةَ الزَّقُّومِ، طَعَامُ الأَثِيمِ}
