for Abraham, Jacob, and Isaac had preceded him. How, then, could Moses declare,
“and I am the first of the believers”?
Likewise, the magicians said,
“for we were the first to believe,”
and the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said,
“and I am the first of the Muslims,”
when many Muslims had come before him, such as Jesus and his followers. They therefore cast doubt upon the Quran and claimed that it was self-contradictory.1
(1) Al-Suyuti (may Allah have mercy on him) reports that ʿAbd b. Humayd, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Abi Hatim and Abu Shaykh relate from Mujahid on the divine words: “tubtu ilayka” (I repent to You) – i.e. from my asking to see You – and on “wa ana awwalu al-muminin” (I am the first of the believers) – i.e. the first of my people to believe.
ʿAbd b. Humayd and Abu Shaykh also transmit from Abu al-ʿAliya on “wa ana awwalu al-muminin”: there were believers before him, yet he means, “I am the first to believe that no one among Your creatures will see You until the Day of Resurrection.”
See: Al-Durr al-manthur, 3/547.
Al-Shawkani (may Allah have mercy on him) comments on “wa ana awwalu al-muminin”: before my contemporaries who acknowledge Your majesty and greatness.
See: Fath al-qadir, 2/355.
Al-Suyuti further relates that ʿAbd al-Razzaq, Ibn al-Mundhir and Ibn Abi Hatim transmit from Qatada on “wanusuki” (my ritual act): i.e. my sacrifice; and on “wa ana awwalu al-muslimin” (I am the first of those who submit): i.e. the first of this community.
See: Al-Durr al-manthur, 3/410; Fath al-qadir, 2/271.
Al-Suyuti also cites Ibn Jarir from Ibn Zayd on “la dayr” (no harm): they say, “what you threaten us with will not hurt us, even if you kill and crucify us”; on “inna ila rabbina munqalibun” (verily we are returning to our Lord): i.e. He will reward us for remaining patient under your punishment, for upholding His oneness, and for dissociating ourselves from disbelief; and on “an kunna awwala al-muminin” (for we were indeed the first to believe): on that day they were the very first to accept His signs when they saw them.
See: Al-Durr al-manthur, 6/293.
Al-Shawkani (may Allah have mercy on him) says regarding “an kunna awwala al-muminin”: they were indeed…
{وأَنا أَوَّلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ}
{أَنْ كُنَّا أَوَّلَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ}
{وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ}
