The heretics also expressed misgivings about His words:
“Glory be to You! I turn to You in repentance, and I am the first of the believers …”
They said: Consider Moses’ statement,
“Glory be to You! I turn to You in repentance, and I am the first of the believers” (Q 7:143),
and the statement of the magicians:
“We hope our Lord will forgive us our sins, for we were the first to believe” (Q 26:51),
and the Prophet’s words—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—
“Say: Indeed my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of all worlds …” up to “… and I am the first of the Muslims” (Q 6:162–163).
They objected: How could Moses say, “and I am the first of the believers” (Q 7:143)?
شك الزنادقة في قوله:
{سُبْحَانَكَ تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ}

وأما قول موسى:
{سُبْحَانَكَ تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ}
[الأعراف: ١٤٣]

وقال السحرة:
{إِنَّا نَطْمَعُ أَنْ يَغْفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَايَانَا أَنْ كُنَّا أَوَّلَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ}
[الشعراء: ٥١]

وقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم:
{قُلْ إِنَّ صَلاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَاي وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ}
إلى قوله:
{وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ}
[الأنعام: ١٦٢، ١٦٣]
