(1) Al-Shawkani, may Allah have mercy on him, writes: ‘Abd al-Razzaq, ‘Abd b. Ḥumayd, Ibn Jarir, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Abi Hatim, and Abu Shaykh all transmit from Mujahid regarding the verse, “Yawm yajmaʿu Allahu al-rusul fa-yaqulu madha ujibtum” (the day when Allah gathers the messengers and says, “What answer were you given?”). The messengers will be seized with fear and will reply, “La ʿilma lana” (“We have no knowledge”), whereupon their hearts will be restored to them and they will then know. Ibn Jarir, Ibn Abi Hatim, and Abu Shaykh likewise report from al-Suddi that the messengers descend to a stage where their minds are overwhelmed; when questioned they answer, “We have no knowledge.” At a later stage their composure returns and they bear witness against their peoples. Ibn Abi Hatim and Abu Shaykh also transmit from Ibn ʿAbbas that the messengers utter, “We have no knowledge,” out of dread that stupefies their minds; Allah then restores their understanding and they are the ones whom He will interrogate, in keeping with His words: “Fa-lana­sʾalanna alladhina ursila ilayhim wa-lana­sʾalanna al-mursalīn” (We shall surely question those to whom messengers were sent, and We shall surely question the messengers) [al-Aʿraf 6].
