and so they denied that they had ever been polytheists. In another verse He says: “They will not be able to conceal any statement from Allah” (Q 4:42). Consequently, the heretics cast doubts on the Quran and alleged that it contained contradictions.1
(1) Shaykh al-Shanqiti, may Allah have mercy on him, said: The verse, “and they will not be able to conceal from Allah any statement” (Quran 4:42), shows that on the Day of Resurrection the unbelievers will hide none of their deeds. Other verses seem to point the other way, such as: “Their only plea will be to say, ‘By Allah, our Lord, we were not idolaters’” (Quran 6:23); “they will surrender, ‘We did not do any evil’” (Quran 16:28); and “No, we were not worshipping anything before” (Quran 40:74). Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, resolved the apparent conflict when he was asked about 6:23 alongside 4:42: their tongues will protest, “By Allah, our Lord, we were not idolaters,” then Allah will seal their mouths and their hands and feet will testify to what they used to do. Concealment, therefore, relates to the tongue, while disclosure comes from the limbs—a synthesis hinted at in “Today We shall seal their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us and their feet will bear witness to what they used to earn” (Quran 36:65). Some scholars answer instead by saying that the events occur in different scenes: at one point they try to hide, at another they cannot. Allah knows best. See: Daf‘u Iham al-Idtirab, 1/57-58.
{وَلا يَكْتُمُونَ اللَّهَ حَدِيثًا}
.
