Al-Rad 'ala al-JahmiyaAhmad Ibn Hanbal

As for His words,

“In a day whose span is fifty thousand years” (Q 70:4),

he explains: Had the reckoning of all creatures been handled by anyone other than Allah, that judge would not finish it in a day measuring fifty thousand years. Allah, however, concludes it in the space of half a day of this world¹ once He begins the reckoning of His servants. Concerning this He said,

“and sufficient are We as Reckoners” (Q 21:47),

meaning the swiftness of the reckoning².

…Ibn ʿAbbas, concerning the verse: fi yawmin kāna miqdāruhū khamsīna alfa sanah (on a Day whose span is fifty thousand years), said: “The reach of His command extends from the lowest strata of the earths to the furthest limit above the seven heavens—its span is fifty-thousand years. As for the verse: yawmun kāna miqdāruhū alfa sanah (a Day whose span is one thousand years), it refers to the descent of the decree from heaven to earth and its ascent back from earth to heaven in a single day. Since the distance between heaven and earth equals a journey of five hundred years, the round-trip totals one thousand years.” See: al-Durr al-manthur, 8/279. 1 Al-Shawkani, may Allah show him mercy, reports that Ibn Ishaq, al-Kalbi, and Wahb b. Munabbih said: the angels ascend to the place assigned to them in a time which, for anyone else, would take fifty thousand years; Mujahid held the same view. ʿIkrimah—and one narration from Mujahid—maintained that the lifespan of the world is of that length; no one knows how much has passed or how much remains except Allah. According to Qatadah, al-Kalbi, and Muhammad b. Kaʿb, the verse refers to the Day of Resurrection: were someone other than Allah to manage its affairs, it would require fifty thousand years, whereas He completes them in a single moment.
