Chapter: On what the Jahmites denied of Allah’s having spoken to Moses … up to his words: “Have you ever heard the crashing of the thunderbolts as they draw near in the sweetest tone your ears have ever tasted? It is as though it were the same.”¹
Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, then commented on this citation, saying:
Imam Ahmad said: “We said to the Jahmites, ‘Who is the One who will say on the Day of Resurrection: O Jesus son of Mary, did you say to the people, Take me and my mother as two gods besides Allah? …’ up to his statement: ‘And we do not say that He existed without majesty until He created majesty for Himself.’²
In: 1/380, 381 Shaykh al-Islam—may Allah have mercy on him—quoted another passage, saying: ‘For that reason Imam Ahmad said at the very beginning of his sermon recorded in al-Radd ʿalā al-Zanādiqah wa’l-Jahmiyyah,’ after which he reproduced the sermon.
At: 2/407, 408 Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, also said:
Imam Ahmad declared: “Chapter explaining what the Jahmites denied of Allah’s having spoken to Moses …” up to his words: “We do not say that He was ignorant and then created knowledge so He became knowing.”³
He then said:
Imam Ahmad stated: “The Jahmites claim: If you assert ‘Allah and His light, Allah and His power, Allah and His grandeur,’ then you have uttered the doctrine of the Christians …” up to his words: “Likewise, Allah—His is the loftiest example—together with all of His attributes, is one God.”⁴
