Al-Rad 'ala al-JahmiyaAhmad Ibn Hanbal

Explanation of how the Jahmiyyah interpreted Allah’s words:

“He is the First and the Last.” (Quran 57:3)

They asserted that Allah existed before creation—and in this they were correct—yet they went on to say that He will be the Last after creation, so that nothing shall remain: no earth, no Paradise, no Hellfire, no reward, no punishment, no Throne, and no Footstool. They contended that absolutely nothing will subsist alongside Allah; He alone will remain just as He has always been, and with this claim they led a great many people astray.1

We reply:

Allah has informed us about Paradise and the everlasting stay of its inhabitants, when He said:

“For them therein is abiding bliss.” [at-Tawbah 9:21]

(1) Al-Ajurri states in his work al-Shariʿa, vol. 3, pp. 1101-1103: One of the verses to which the incarnationists (hululiyya) appeal in order to mislead the uninformed is the word of the Almighty: “He is the First and the Last, the Most High and the Most Near” (Hadid, 3). The scholars have explained it as follows: “the First” – He existed before everything, whether life or death; “the Last” – He remains after all creation; “the Most High” – He is above everything, that is, above the heavens; “the Most Near” – He is beneath everything, knowing what is under the earths. The end of the verse confirms this meaning: “and He has full knowledge of all things.” This is exactly how Muqatil b. Hayyan and Muqatil b. Sulayman interpreted it, and the sunnah corroborates it. Abu ʿAbd Allah Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Shahin related to us: Yusuf b. Musa al-Qattan told us, Jarir narrated from Mutarrif, from al-Shaʿbi, from ʿAisha—may Allah be pleased with her—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: “O Allah, You are the First—nothing precedes You; You are the Last—nothing follows You; You are the Most High—nothing is above You; You are the Most Near—nothing is beneath You.” The annotator remarks: its chain of transmission is sound (isnad hasan).
