[A clarification of the Jahmiyyah’s allegation that the Qur’an is created, based on certain reported ḥadiths]
They said, “A ḥadith states:
‘The Qur’an will come in the form of a pale young man. He will approach his companion and say, “Do you recognize me?” The man will ask, “Who are you?” He will reply, “I am the Qur’an; I made you thirst by day and kept you awake at night.”’ 1
The narrator added: ‘Then Allah will bring him forward and he will say, “My Lord….”’
On the strength of these reports they claimed that the Qur’an is created.
We replied to them:
The statement that “the Qur’an comes” can only mean that the reward comes to the one who recites, for example,
“Qul huwa Allahu aḥad – Say, He is Allah, the One” (112:1),
and is granted such-and-such a recompense. Do you not see that when a person recites
“Qul huwa Allahu aḥad,”
nothing comes to him except its reward? We recite the Qur’an and it is said, “My Lord…,” yet the speech of Allah itself does not come, nor does it pass from one state to another. What is meant by “the Qur’an comes” is only that the reward for the Qur’an comes. My Lord. 2
