A discussion on Allah’s name in the Quran: is it created?
Or have the Jahmiyyah claimed that the word “Allah”—exalted is His praise—occurring in the Quran is nothing more than a created name? We therefore said to them: Before this name was brought into being, what was His name?
They replied, “He had no name⦗1⦘.”
So we said, “Likewise, before knowledge was created, was He ignorant, knowing nothing, until He produced knowledge for Himself⦗2⦘? Had He no light until He brought light into existence for Himself? And had He no power until He generated power for Himself?”
= Moreover, they remain confused: now they affirm one thing, then another, and no faction among them can refute the other because they all spring from the same corrupt premise.
(1) Al-Khallal, al-Sunnah, 5/138: Abū ʿAbd Allāh (Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal) said, “The Quran is part of Allah’s knowledge; has He not said: ‘He taught the Quran’ (surah al-Rahman, 55:2)? The Quran also contains the names of Allah. Do they not maintain that the names of Allah are uncreated? Whoever claims that Allah’s names are created has fallen into disbelief. Allah has always been Mighty, Knowing, Powerful, Wise, Hearing and Seeing. We are certain that Allah’s names are uncreated, and that His knowledge is uncreated; the Quran is Allah’s speech, and Allah has ever been Wise. What disbelief could be clearer than this? When they allege that the Quran is created, they are in fact alleging that Allah’s names and His knowledge are created—yet people treat the matter lightly, saying: ‘They only say the Quran is created,’ not realising the unbelief it entails.”
(2) Al-Khallal, al-Sunnah, 6/29: Abū l-Naḍr Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAjlī reported: “I heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh say: Whoever says that Allah’s names or His knowledge are created is a disbeliever.” Muḥammad ibn Abī Hārūn and Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar further related from Abū l-Ḥārith: “I heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh say: The Quran is Allah’s speech, uncreated. Whoever claims it is created has disbelieved, for he claims that Allah’s knowledge is created and that He possessed no knowledge until He created it.”
