But if he says, “He created them outside Himself and then entered into them,” that too is disbelief, for he is asserting that He has entered every vile, filthy, and repulsive place. And if he says, “He created them outside Himself and then did not enter into them,” he has abandoned his entire claim, and that is the position of Ahl al-Sunnah. 1, 2
…the atheists and the deviants attribute to Him. Rather, we affirm that our Lord—exalted be He—occupies the loftiest heights, above the highest of the high. He rose over His Throne above His heavens, while His knowledge encompasses all His creatures: He knows what is distant just as He knows what is near; He knows what is hidden just as He knows what is manifest. He described Himself, saying: “With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them but He. He knows what is on land and at sea; not a leaf falls without His knowing it, nor a grain in the darkness of the earth, nor anything moist or dry, save that it is (written) in a clear Book” (al-Anam 6:59).
Thus His knowledge embraces everything He created in the highest heavens, in the seven earths, in what lies between them, and beneath the soil. He knows the secret and what is still more concealed; He knows the furtive glance of the eyes and what the breasts hide; He knows the passing thought and the settled intention, and everything the souls whisper within. He hears and sees, and from His vantage point on high not even a particle’s weight in the heavens or the earth escapes Him; His knowledge encircles it all while He is upon His Throne, glorified and Most High. The deeds of His servants rise up to Him, though He is more knowledgeable of them than the angels who witnessed and recorded them and conveyed them to Him night and day. Transcendent is our Lord, far above what the deniers attribute to Him and the atheists liken to Him.
(1) The lines enclosed in brackets are missing from Dr. Amirah’s copy; they were restored from Shaykh al-Ansari’s copy, Ibn Taymiyyah, Darʾ taʿāruḍ al-ʿaql wa-l-naql, vol. 3, p. 176, and Bayan talbis al-jahmiyyah, vol. 2, p. 549. The omitted passage occurs after the phrase: “So where is our Lord?”—“He is in everything.”
(2) Ibn Taymiyyah’s quotation ends here in Darʾ taʿāruḍ al-ʿaql wa-l-naql, vol. 3, p. 176, and Bayan talbis al-jahmiyyah, vol. 2, p. 549. He then adds in Bayan talbis that Ahmad’s argument rests on God’s being neither mixed with creation nor inseparable from them in a way that entails commingling—an intuitive rational truth that even many Jahmites reluctantly concede when they claim that God is “in every place,” for the human heart instinctively repudiates any alternative to these two positions.
