…“the radiance of His Face would burn all that His sight reaches of His creation.” Another report says: “Among you angels take turns by night and by day; they meet at the afternoon and dawn prayers. Those who spent the night with you then ascend, and He—though He knows best about them—asks: ‘How did you leave My servants?’ They reply: ‘We left them while they were praying and we found them while they were praying.’” When Saʿd b. Muʿadh judged the Banū Qurayza, the Messenger of Allah said: “You have ruled among them with the judgement of Allah from above seven layers,” and in another wording, “from above seven heavens.” When the Prophet distributed a piece of gold among four men, one Companion objected, saying that they were more entitled to it. The Prophet replied: “Will you not trust me while I am the trustee of Him who is in the heaven? News from the heaven comes to me morning and evening.” About the slave-girl, the Messenger of Allah asked her: “Where is Allah?” She answered: “In the heaven.” He said: “And who am I?” She replied: “You are the Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Set her free, for she is a believer.” Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh used to say, boasting over the other wives of the Prophet: “Your families gave you in marriage, whereas Allah married me from above seven heavens.” Another hadith states: “The merciful are shown mercy by the All-Merciful; show mercy to those on earth and the One in the heaven will show you mercy.” And: “If a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, the One in the heaven remains displeased with her until he is satisfied with her.” And: “Your Lord is modest and generous; He feels shy that His servant should raise his two hands to Him and He return them empty.” And: “Allah has travelling angels who roam about seeking gatherings of remembrance. When they find a gathering, they sit with them; when the gathering disperses, the angels ascend to their Lord.” Muslim’s wording adds: “When they disperse they ascend to the heaven, and Allah—mighty and exalted—asks them, though He knows best about them: ‘From where have you come?’” And: “Allah—exalted is He—was upon the Throne; He existed before everything, and He wrote in the Preserved Tablet everything that will occur.” And: “When Allah finished creating His creation He rose over His Throne.” Ibn al-Qayyim—may Allah have mercy on him—quotes these and many other reports, then transmits abundant statements from the Companions, the Successors, the four Imams and others. For these citations see Ijtimaʿ al-Juyush al-Islamiyya, pp. 118–331, especially pp. 200–208, where the saying of Imam Ahmad cited here is employed against the Jahmiyya.
