Al-Rad 'ala al-JahmiyaAhmad Ibn Hanbal

Denying that Allah shares space with the devils and declaring Him far above any contact with impurity or corporeality.

We said to them, “Do you not know that Iblis has his own place, and that the devils each have their own place,1 so it is impossible for Allah and Iblis to be together in a single location?2

The intended meaning of the Almighty’s words,

‘He is Allah in the heavens and on the earth’ (Al-Anʿām 3),

is nothing other than

(1) In the copies used by Dr. ʿUmayrah and Shaykh al-Ansari the bracketed phrase reads: “that Iblis was in his place and the devils in theirs.” The wording followed here is that of Ibn Taymiyya’s Bayan talbis al-Jahmiyya, 2/544. (2) Ibn Taymiyya, Bayan talbis al-Jahmiyya, 2/544–545, writes: “Declaring Allah’s transcendence above mingling with impure and filthy living beings is analogous to declaring Him above mingling with filthy, impure inanimate things. For that reason the Prophet forbade praying in places frequented by devils, such as bathhouses, refuse pits, camel enclosures and the like, even when no solid impurity is present—for camel droppings are pure. It is also authentically reported from the Prophet in several chains that a dog breaks the prayer, and in a rigorously sound hadith he restricted this to the black dog. When asked about the difference between a red, a white and a black dog he said: ‘The black one is a devil.’ Shaykh al-Islam further explains that the jinn-devil interrupts the prayer; that he is cursed and expelled; that devils are pelted with shooting stars so they cannot steal hearing; and that Allah has commanded His servants to seek refuge from Satan. He then adds (2/545): ‘Since the devil is cursed, banished and driven away so that he neither meets Allah’s angels nor hears what they receive of revelation, it is obvious that his distance from Allah is even greater. Allah is supremely exalted above any proximity to devils. If, however, many places are filled with devils while Allah were in every place, the devils would then be close to Him, neither distant nor expelled, and could hear His speech just as they sometimes overhear the angels. It is self-evident that Allah must be declared far more transcendent and sanctified than this—far beyond the transcendence we affirm for the angels, prophets, righteous servants, their recitation of His words, or the sites of their worship—for His very Essence is most entitled to be purified and exalted above all created substances and above the speech recited by His creatures.’
