is ignorant.

Rather, we say that Allah has never ceased to be all-knowing and all-powerful; no “when” confines Him and no “how” encompasses Him.1

Allah even called a disbeliever—al-Walid ibn al-Mughira al-Makhzumi—saying:

“Leave Me with the one I created alone.” (74:11)

Yet this man whom Allah described as “alone” possessed eyes, ears, a tongue, lips, hands, feet, and many other limbs. Allah still called him “alone” while including all those attributes. In the same way—and to Allah belongs the highest comparison—He, together with all of His attributes, is one single God.

(2) The quotation from Ibn Taymiyyah ends here in Minhaj al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah, 2/484-485; in Dar’ Taʿarud al-ʿAql wa-l-Naql, 2/408; and in Bayan Talbis al-Jahmiyyah, 1/463-464. Ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah have mercy on him—says in Dar’ al-Taʿarud, 2/408-409: I say: Nowhere in the speech of Allah or His Messenger, nor in the Arabic language, is the name “the One” applied to something that lacks attributes, for what is without attributes has no existence in reality. Ahmad reported that the Jahmiyyah interpret Allah’s words to Moses as meaning that He created someone to speak on His behalf. A number of later followers advanced the same reading, whether here or with respect to the nightly declaration, “Who will call upon Me so that I may answer him?” Were that interpretation correct, the angel would have to say, “Allah, Lord of the worlds, says…,” whereas the two Sahih collections state: “When Allah loves a servant, He calls Jibril: ‘I love so-and-so, so love him,’ and Jibril loves him; then he proclaims in heaven: ‘Allah loves so-and-so, so love him,’ and the inhabitants of heaven love him,” and so forth. He then adds, may Allah have mercy on him: Allah, exalted be He, affirms His attributes in detail and negates resemblance in general terms. The Jahmi negationists—whether theologians or philosophers—do the reverse: they offer a vague affirmation but a detailed negation. In His Book Allah affirms that He is Living, Self-Subsisting, All-Knowing, All-Powerful, All-Hearing, All-Seeing, Mighty, Wise; that He is pleased and angry, loves and detests; that He creates and rose over the Throne, and so on. In negation He says: “There is nothing like Him” (al-Shura 11); “None is comparable to Him” (al-Ikhlas 4); “Do you know of any namesake for Him?” (Maryam 65). Hence the creed of the salaf and the leading imams is to affirm His attributes without likening them to the creation,
