Al-Rad 'ala al-JahmiyaAhmad Ibn Hanbal

of Allah.1

Then al-Jahm came forward with yet another claim. He said, “Allah declares, ‘He created the heavens and the earth and whatever lies between them in six days’ (al-Sajdah 32:4).” On that basis he argued that the Qur’an cannot be anywhere except in the heavens, on the earth, or in the space between them, thereby sowing confusion and misleading the people.

We said to him, “Has not Allah—glorious is His praise—and the very terms ‘creation’ and ‘created’ been applied only to what is in the heavens, on the earth, and in between them?” They replied, “Yes.”

So we asked, “Is there anything created above the heavens?” They said, “Yes.”

We then said, “In that case, He did not include what lies above the heavens among the things—”

(1) Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, Dar’ taʿāruḍ al-ʿaql wa-l-naql, vol. 10, pp. 4 & 11, after citing this objection from the Jahmiyyah, writes: “Imam Ahmad showed that both the Jahmiyyah who negate the attributes and the Christian ḥulūliyyah who affirm indwelling have erred in this matter. The Jahmiyyah, by their denial, liken the Creator to the creation in attributes of deficiency—just as Allah related of the Jews when they imputed defects to Him—when they claim that He, in His essence, neither speaks nor loves, and so forth. The ḥulūliyyah, by contrast, liken the creation to the Creator, ascribing to it perfections that belong to Allah alone, exactly as the Christians did with the Messiah. Whoever combines both negation and indwelling, like the ḥulūliyyah among the Jahmiyyah …” He continues: “The word kalām (speech, word) may denote the divine attribute itself, as in: ‘wa tammat kalimatu rabbika sidqan wa ʿadlan’ (The word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and justice) [al-Anʿām 115], and: ‘yurīdūna an yubaddilū kalāma llāh’ (They desire to alter the word of Allah) [al-Fatḥ 15]. It may also refer to what comes into being by that word, such as the Messiah to whom He said ‘kun’ (Be) and he was; He created him without a father, in an extraordinary manner, so he was brought into existence solely by the word, unlike the rest of mankind—just as He created Adam and Ḥawwāʾ in ways outside the norm. Thus ʿĪsā, peace be upon him, was created solely by the word, unlike the other descendants of Adam.”
