Another specious argument advanced by the Jahmites to prove that the Quran is created:
Jahm then put forward a second claim, saying, “We have found a verse in Allah’s Book that shows the Quran is created.”
We asked, “Which verse?”
He replied, “Allah’s statement: ‘The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, is only the messenger of Allah and His word’ [al-Nisa 4:171]. And Jesus is created.”
We answered, “Allah has withheld from you a proper understanding of the Quran. Jesus is described with expressions that can never be applied to the Quran. Allah calls him a newborn, an infant, a boy, a young man; he eats and drinks; he is addressed with commands and prohibitions, and words of direct address, promise, and threat pertain to him. Furthermore, he is from the descendants of Noah and of Abraham. It is impermissible for us to speak of the Quran as we speak of Jesus. Have you ever heard Allah say about the Quran what He says about Jesus?
“The meaning of the Almighty’s words—‘The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the messenger of Allah and His word which He cast to Mary’ [al-Nisa 4:171]—is that the ‘word’ He cast to Mary was His saying to him, ‘Be,’ and Jesus came into existence by that command, ‘Be.’”
