And He says:
“When his Lord revealed Himself to the mountain, He made it crumble” (7:143).
This does not mean, “and He created it as rubble,” and many similar instances occur in the Quran. Therefore, everything of this kind is not to be taken as “created.” Since Allah sometimes uses jaʿala with the sense of “created” and at other times with a different sense, on what grounds does the Jahmī insist that jaʿala here must mean “created”? If the Jahmī returns the word to the meaning that Allah Himself assigned to it, so be it; otherwise he becomes one of those “who hear the words of Allah and then knowingly distort them after they have understood them.”¹
Allah said: “Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Quran so that you might understand” (43:3); He also said: “that you may be among the warners, in a clear Arabic tongue” (26:194–195); and He said: “We have only made it easy in your tongue” (19:97).
When Allah made the Quran Arabic and facilitated it upon the tongue of His Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—this was an action of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: He made the Quran Arabic, that is, a manifest clarification for anyone whom Allah wishes to guide. It is not, as they claim, merely “We sent it down in the language of the Arabs.” It has also been said: “We clarified it.”
Then Jahm put forward yet another claim—one that is impossible. He said: “Tell us about the Quran: is it Allah, or is it other than Allah?”
