The Jahmiyyah⦗1⦘—when people ask them about Allah’s statement, “There is nothing like unto Him” (Q 42:11)—reply: “Nothing at all resembles Him; He is beneath the seven earths just as He is upon the Throne. No place is devoid of Him, nor is He confined to one location rather than another. He has not spoken, nor does He speak. No one will behold Him, whether in this world or the Hereafter. He can be described by no attribute and is known by no quality. He performs no act; He has no limit and no end. The intellect cannot comprehend Him. He is, in His entirety, face; in His entirety, knowledge; in His entirety, hearing…"
…and fashioned the entire Muʿtazilite doctrine. He would revile the Companions and transmit hadith inaccurately, out of confusion rather than deliberate fabrication. Al-Darqutni and others considered him weak in narration. Al-Fallas said: “ʿAmr is to be abandoned; he is an innovator.”
Ibn Taymiyya remarks in Bayan Talbis al-Jahmiyya (1/275): “He is the chief of speculative theology, the foremost promoter of zandaqa (heretical freethinking), and the leader of the Muʿtazila—so called because he ‘withdrew’ from the study circle of al-Hasan al-Basri. Imam Malik b. Anas, the authority of the traditionists, cursed him; Abu Hanifa, the authority of the jurists of opinion, did likewise; and ʿAbd Allah b. al-Mubarak, the imam of the eastern lands, warned people against him.”
(1) Ibn Taymiyya, Darʾ taʿarud al-ʿaql wa-l-naql, 2/410-411: “I say: the Samaniyya with whom Imam Ahmad reports Jahm debating are those whom the sectarian works describe as denying all knowledge except what is apprehended by the senses. They therefore asked Jahm, ‘Have you perceived Him with any of the five senses?’ He answered, ‘No.’ They responded, ‘Then how do you know He is a god?’ For they acknowledge only what is tangible. Their intent was not that a man knows only what he senses, but that they affirm only what is perceptible to people in this life.
“These people resemble the naturalistic, atheistic materialists among the Greek philosophers and their likes, who reject everything beyond this visible, sensible cosmos of the celestial spheres and what they contain.
“The argument Ahmad cited from Jahm against the Samaniyya is one of the strongest proofs employed by such deniers—whether by those who accept hulul (indwelling) and ittihad (union) or by those who negate both indwelling and separateness. At times they speak of indwelling and union; at other times they claim that He is neither apart from the world nor within it.”
{لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ}
