—so he built the very foundation of his discourse upon those verses⦗1⦘, interpreted the Qur’an in a way alien to its true meaning, dismissed the Prophet’s hadiths as falsifications, and claimed that anyone who described Allah with any of the attributes by which He has described Himself in His Book—or that His Messenger conveyed about Him—was a disbeliever and one of the mushabbihah (anthropomorphists). By his words he led a great many people astray. Men from among the associates of Abu Ḥanīfah, as well as the followers of ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd⦗2⦘ in Basra, adopted his view, and he went on to invent a religion of his own.
…the verbal and semantic parallelism between His words, “Vision perceives Him not, yet He perceives vision” (6:103). Because of His majesty He is too exalted to be grasped or encompassed by the eyes, while through His subtle kindness and perfect knowledge He Himself perceives every eye, so that nothing remains hidden from Him. He is the Magnificent in His subtlety and the Subtle in His magnificence, the Most-High in His nearness and the Most-Near in His exaltedness; nothing resembles Him, for He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. Eyes do not perceive Him, yet He perceives the eyes; He is the All-Subtle, the All-Aware. See: Ibn al-Qayyim, Hadi al-Arwah, pp. 412-414.
1 Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya states in Darʾ taʿarud al-ʿaql wa-l-naql, 2/414-415: Ahmad reported that Jahm based his doctrine on three Quranic verses whose meanings seem ambiguous to the uninformed: (a) the verse negating perception, which he used to deny the beatific vision and divine transcendence; (b) the verse negating any likeness, which he used to reject the divine attributes and to brand those who affirm them as anthropomorphists; and (c) the verse, “He is Allah in the heavens and on earth” (6:3), which he used to deny Allah’s elevation above the Throne, or even to claim indwelling, union, and non-distinction from creation. These are the core principles of the Jahmiyyah among the Muʿtazilah—the followers of ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd—and of everyone who embraced Jahmi or Muʿtazili ideas, wholly or partially, among some affiliates of Abu Hanifah, Malik, al-Shafiʿi, and Ahmad, though these four Imams themselves are the furthest from such principles.
2 Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi remarks in Mizan al-Iʿtidal, 3/273-280, no. 6404: “ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd ibn Bab, Abu ʿUthman al-Basri, the Muʿtazili Qadari—despite his asceticism and devotion….” Ibn Maʿin said, “His hadith is not to be recorded.” Al-Nasaʾi said, “He is rejected in hadith.” Ayyub and Yunus said, “He lies.” Humayd said, “He used to fabricate reports from al-Hasan.” Ibn Hibban commented: “He was a man of scrupulousness and worship until he introduced his innovations and, along with a group, withdrew from the circle of al-Hasan; thus they were called…
