Al-Rad 'ala al-JahmiyaAhmad Ibn Hanbal

As for the explanation of His words—

“the people of Paradise will call out to the people of the Fire” (7:44) and “the people of the Fire will call out to the people of Paradise”—

it is that, the moment they are cast into Hell, they address one another and cry out:

“They will cry, ‘O Mālik, let your Lord finish us off!’ He will answer, ‘You must remain’” (43:77),

and they will say,

“Our Lord, grant us a brief respite” (14:44),

and,

“Our Lord, our misery overwhelmed us” (23:106).

They continue speaking until it is said to them,

“Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me” (23:108).

Thereupon they become blind, dumb, and deaf; all speech is cut off, and nothing is heard but their moaning and sobbing. This is the explanation of the passage about which the heretics cast their doubts regarding the word of God.1

= And likewise His saying: {Rabbana absarna wa sami'na farji'na na'mal salihan} (Our Lord, we have seen and heard; send us back that we may act righteously) – Surah as-Sajda 32:12. The reply can be formulated in three ways: 1. As Abu Hayyan argues, the verse speaks literally: at first they are blind, dumb and deaf, then Allah restores their sight, speech and hearing so that they behold the Fire, hear its roaring and say what the Qur'an reports elsewhere. 2. They are shown nothing pleasing, hear nothing pleasing and speak no valid plea; just as in this life they failed to perceive, utter or listen to the truth. Ibn Jarir and Ibn Abi Hatim transmit this from Ibn Abbas, and it is also related from al-Hasan as cited by al-Alusi. Their seeing, hearing and speech are therefore treated as nonexistent because they yield no benefit, as noted above. 3. When Allah declares, "Ikhsau fiha wa la tukallimun" (Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me), they are stricken with blindness, deafness and dumbness out of extreme anguish and despair of relief. Allah says: "Wa waqa'a al-qawlu 'alayhim bima zalamu fahum la yantiqun" (And the Word is fulfilled against them for what they wrongfully did, so they do not speak) – Surah an-Naml 27:85. On this view, the three conditions occur successively. See: Daf' Iham al-Idtirab, 10/128. 1 Sources: Tafsir al-Tabari 8/201; Tafsir Ibn Kathir 3/70; Tafsir al-Shawkani 3/261.
