to realize within themselves the rank of true following. In so doing they single out the Messenger ﷺ alone for obedience, just as Allah Most High alone is singled out for worship. Thus they will give practical—not merely verbal—expression to the testimony that “there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” In deed, not by claim alone, they will embody the slogan “Sovereignty belongs to Allah alone,” after having already proclaimed and chanted it. By the same token they will raise up the “unique Qur’anic generation” that, by Allah’s permission, shall establish the long-awaited Islamic state.
This lecture was met with great approval from the broad body of educated Muslim students who heard it. Recognizing its objective scholarly discussion and sound, upright opinion, they sent numerous letters to the author asking him to print and disseminate it so that every sincere and zealous Muslim who seeks the truth and clings to it might benefit.
It is also fitting to note here that our esteemed teacher has a third work on the Sunnah: a lecture he delivered about two years ago to a gathering of Muslim youth in the beloved land of Qatar, in which he spoke of the Sunnah’s importance, its position in Islamic legislation, and our need for it in order to understand and interpret the Qur’an. May Allah grant that this too be published soon.
Responding to the many requests for the printing and distribution of this valuable lecture, we approached our noble teacher, and—may Allah reward him well—he graciously agreed. We therefore read it back to him and revised it under his supervision.
