So he is told: Focus your concern on what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ brought; be diligent with it—pursue it, collect it, and alzim (adhere firmly to) learning the conditions and biographies of its transmitters. Turn away from everything else; make this your ultimate pursuit and final aim. Indeed, be as eager for it as the followers of the juridical schools are to ascertain the positions of their imams, to the point that they possess self-evident certainty that those positions are truly their imams’ views; were anyone to deny that, they would ridicule him. Only then will you discover whether the reports of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ yield certain knowledge or not. But so long as you neglect them and refuse to seek them out, they will not give you knowledge, and if you even claim that they do not supply you with conjecture, you are merely reporting the extent of your own share and portion of them.
