they have fled from accepting a preponderant probability (ẓann rājiḥ) in matters of creed, only to tumble into something far worse: staking their creed on an outweighed, inferior conjecture (ẓann marjūḥ). “So take warning, O people of insight!” (Qur’an 59:2). This has happened solely because they have turned away from gaining true understanding of the Book and the Sunnah, from seeking guidance directly through their light, and have busied themselves instead with the opinions of men.
