I have commanded or forbidden, and he then says, “I do not know; whatever we find in the Book of Allah we shall follow—otherwise, we shall not.”
Recorded by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi—who declared it sound—, Ibn Majah, al-Tahawi, and others with an authentic chain.
5 – Al-Miqdam ibn Maʿdikarib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Behold, I have been given the Quran and something like it along with it. Beware! A time is near when a well-fed man, reclining on his couch, will say, ‘Adhere to this Quran; whatever you find in it declared lawful, treat as lawful, and whatever you find in it declared unlawful, treat as unlawful.’ Yet what the Messenger of Allah has forbidden is just like what Allah has forbidden. Listen well: it is not lawful for you to eat the domesticated donkey, nor any predatory animal with fangs, nor to take the lost property of a treaty-bound non-Muslim unless its owner has abandoned hope of recovering it. Whoever lodges with a people, it is incumbent upon them to host him; if they do not host him, he may recompense himself from them with the equivalent of what is due to him.”1
Recorded by Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Hakim—who authenticated it—and Ahmad with a sound chain.
6 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“I have left among you two things; you will never go astray after them so long as you hold fast to them: the Book…”
