is asleep,’ while others said, ‘His eyes may sleep, but his heart is awake.’ They then said, ‘Your companion has been given a parable; so present it to him.’ They said, ‘His likeness is that of a man who built a house, prepared a banquet therein, and sent a herald. Whoever answered the herald entered the house and ate from the banquet; whoever did not answer the herald neither entered the house nor ate from the banquet.’ They said, ‘Explain it so that he may understand.’ Some of them said, ‘He is asleep,’ while others said, ‘The eyes are asleep but the heart is awake.’ They said, ‘The house is Paradise, the herald is Muhammad ﷺ; whoever obeys Muhammad ﷺ has obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys Muhammad ﷺ has disobeyed Allah. Muhammad ﷺ is the separator1 between the people.’
It was also recorded by al-Bukhari.
3 – Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
‘My likeness and the likeness of what Allah has sent me with are like a man who came to some people and said, “O my people, I have seen the army with my own eyes, and I am the naked warner, so flee, flee!” A group among his people obeyed him; they set out in the night and travelled at their ease, and thus they were saved. Another group denied him and remained where they were; the army overtook them at dawn, destroyed them, and swept them away. Such is the parable of one who obeys me and follows what I have brought, and the parable of one who disobeys me and rejects the truth with which I have been sent.’ Recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
4 – Abu Rafiʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Let me not find one of you reclining on his couch when a directive from me reaches him concerning something…’
