al-Tawassul: Anwauhu wa AhkamuhuNasir al-Din al-Albani

—when they cross-reference one report to another, they spell out whatever additional wording the cited version contains over the first.

In short, the addition is not authentic because it is anomalous; and even if it were authentic it could not serve as evidence for the permissibility of seeking tawassul through the Prophet’s very person, ﷺ, for the phrase “then do the like of it” could just as well mean: come to him ﷺ while he is alive, ask him to supplicate, make tawassul by means of him, perform ablution and prayer, and recite the supplication that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught him to say. Allah knows best.

The second addition: the story of the man who dealt with ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān and made tawassul through the Prophet ﷺ until his need was met. Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in his al-Muʿjam al-Ṣaghīr (pp. 103–104) and in al-Kabīr (3/2/1/1–2) through the chain of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb, from Shabīb ibn Saʿīd al-Makkī, from Rūḥ ibn al-Qāsim, from Abū Jaʿfar al-Khaṭmī al-Madanī, from Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl ibn Ḥanīf, from his uncle ʿUthmān ibn Ḥanīf:

A man used to go to ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān—may Allah be pleased with him—concerning a need of his, but ʿUthmān would neither look at him nor attend to his request. He met ʿUthmān ibn Ḥanīf and complained about that. ʿUthmān ibn Ḥanīf said to him, “Go to the place of ablution, perform wudūʾ; then go to the mosque and pray two rakʿahs, after which say: ‘O Allah, I ask You and turn to You by our Prophet Muḥammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—the Prophet of mercy. O Muḥammad, I turn by means of you to your Lord that He fulfil my need.’ Then mention your need, and come to me so that I may go with you.”

The man went off and did as he had been told. He then came to the door of ʿUthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—whereupon the doorkeeper took him by the hand, brought him inside, seated him beside ʿUthmān on a cushion, and said, “What is your need?” He stated it, and ʿUthmān granted it. Then ʿUthmān said to him, “I had not remembered your need until this very moment,” and added, “Whatever needs you may have…"
