been mentioned in any of the biographical works. In addition, the chain itself is confused. For the report—as you have seen—was also transmitted by Hishām ibn Saʿd from Zayd ibn Aslam who said, “from his father,” instead of “from Ibn ʿUmar.” Hishām, however, is more reliable than Dāwūd, yet we have not come across his actual wording, so we cannot determine whether it contradicts Dāwūd’s version or not. Do not be misled by their remark in al-Miṣbāḥ placed after this chain—“bihi”—which suggests that the wording is identical, for their sole source in what they cited from al-Balādhurī is Fath al-Bārī, and Ibn Ḥajar does not say “bihi.” See Fath al-Bārī ⦗2/399⦘.
Second: Even if this narration were authentic, it would only clarify the reason ʿUmar sought tawassul through al-ʿAbbās rather than any of the other Companions present at the time. It cannot be taken to show that they considered it permissible to forego tawassul by the Prophet’s very person ﷺ—were that acceptable to them—in favor of tawassul by al-ʿAbbās, i.e., by his person. Far from it, for we know by self-evident necessity—as some have observed—that if a community were afflicted by severe drought and wished to seek tawassul through one of them, they would never bypass the one whose supplication is closest to acceptance and to Allah’s mercy. Likewise, were a person struck by a grievous calamity and standing before him were both a prophet and a non-prophet, he would ask only the prophet to supplicate; were he to ask the non-prophet and leave the prophet aside, he would be counted among the ignorant sinners. How, then, could it be imagined that ʿUmar and the Companions with him would turn away from tawassul through the Prophet ﷺ to tawassul through someone else if tawassul through his very person were lawful—especially when, even according to the opponents, it is superior to tawassul by the supplication of al-ʿAbbās or any other righteous person? All the more so since this occurred on several occasions, as noted earlier; yet they never once sought tawassul through him ﷺ, and it continued
