I say: The report under discussion is baseless and inauthentic. Ibn al-Jawzī recorded it in al-Mawḍūʿāt and declared, “This ḥadīth is undoubtedly fabricated,” a verdict affirmed by the ḥadīth master al-Zaylaʿī in Nasb al-Rayah (273). Therefore, it carries no evidentiary weight. Even though a person’s statement, “I ask You by the fastenings of majesty of Your Throne,” in fact amounts to seeking nearness through an attribute of
through someone other than Him, citing the report of the three men in the cave and the hadith of Buraidah, both already mentioned on pp. 33–34, and then proceed to interpret the two texts incorrectly. They make this claim even though, in their normal methodology, they are immersed in taqlid (blind imitation) up to their ears and routinely turn away from any hadith whose chain is sound and wording explicit whenever it contradicts their school. Why, then, do they suddenly adopt our method the moment every avenue for refuting us from within the madhhab is blocked? Is this not sheer inconsistency on their part—heedlessness or self-deception? Or does the Qur’anic description apply to them: “They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts,” merely to reject the truth affirmed by the very Imam of their school because it supports our call to abandon tawassul (supplicatory mediation) by persons and restrict tawassul to Allah Himself and His attributes?
I wonder: are they prepared to make acting upon sound hadith their guiding principle in all of their fiqh, so that we may confront them with dozens—indeed hundreds—of authentic reports they have set aside in favor of their school, thereby bringing their perspective into line with ours? Or will their practice remain to follow the hadith and abandon the madhhab when that serves their whim and desire, yet cling to the madhhab and reject the hadith when it does not?
Their reliance on the hadith of Buraidah and the story of the cave-dwellers is invalid, for both texts speak explicitly of tawassul through righteous deeds: in the first, the testimony of monotheism; in the second, dutifulness to parents, abstaining from the forbidden, and kindness to an employee. We affirm the legitimacy of such tawassul and are not fanatically attached to Abu Hanifah’s earlier statement whose outward sense appears to deny this form of mediation. We are not bound to adopt his view when it conflicts with a hadith, for to us the hadith takes precedence. The only difference between us and the blind imitators is what they outwardly display—“and Allah knows best what they conceal.” As for their labeling this form of tawassul “supplicating Allah through others,” that is one of their baseless stratagems and transparent sophistries, as anyone of sound intellect can readily see.
