that this matter is good for me in my faith, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs—its immediate and its eventual consequences—then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. But if You know that this matter is bad for me in my faith, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs—its immediate and its eventual consequences—then avert it from me and avert me from it, and ordain for me what is good wherever it may be, and then make me content with it. 1
Among them is the supplication: “O Allah, set right for me my religion, which is the safeguard of my affairs; set right for me my worldly life in which my livelihood lies; set right for me my Hereafter to which I will return. Make life for me an increase in every good, and make death a relief for me from every evil.” 2
And: “O Allah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over the creation, keep me alive so long as You know that life is better for me, and cause me to die whenever You know that death is better for me …” 3
And: “O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and sufficiency.” 4
And: “O Allah, apportion for us such fear of You as will keep us from disobeying You, and such obedience to You as will bring us to Your Paradise …” 5
And: “O Allah, Lord of Gabriel, Michael, Israfil, and Muhammad, we seek refuge with You from the Fire.” 6
Prayers of this type are plentiful in the Sunnah, and not one authentic supplication contains any trace of the innovated forms of tawassul practiced by the dissenters.
