From what has already been explained we know that two distinct matters must be kept in view. First: the means by which one seeks nearness—tawassul—must itself be sanctioned, and that can be known only through an authentic proof from the Quran and the Sunnah. Second: the causal means employed must be a real, effective cause that can lead to the desired result.
We also know that Allah has commanded us to call on Him and to seek His help. He says, “Call upon Me and I will answer you; surely those who wax too proud to worship Me will enter Hell in humiliation.” (1) And He, exalted, says, “When My servants ask you about Me, I am indeed near; I answer the supplicant’s call whenever he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, that they may be rightly guided.” (2)
Moreover, the Almighty has legislated for us certain beneficial forms of tawassul that fulfill their purpose, and He has guaranteed that the one who employs them will have his supplication answered, provided the other conditions of duʿāʾ are met. Let us now look—without bias or partisanship—at what the sound scriptural texts actually indicate concerning tawassul.
