I add: its chain of transmission is likewise sound.
Shurayk also followed ʿĀṣim in reporting it, with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—saw Gabriel in his own form; he had six hundred wings, each of which filled the horizon. From his wings there fell—of awe-inspiring marvels, pearls, and rubies—what only Allah knows.” This is likewise recorded by Aḥmad 1/395.
Shurayk, however, is weak in memory, and his statement, “each wing filled the horizon,” is, in my view, objectionable; Allah knows best.
Ninth report: Isḥāq ibn Abī al-Kahtalah narrated from Ibn Masʿūd that he said, “Muḥammad saw Gabriel in his true form only twice. On one occasion he asked him to show himself in that form, so he did, and the horizon was blotted out. The other was when he ascended with him on the night journey, concerning which Allah says, ‘He was on the highest horizon, then he drew near and came down, till he was two bow-lengths away, or even nearer, and He revealed to His servant what He revealed’ (53:7-10). When Gabriel sensed the presence of his Lord, he returned to his (angelic) form and prostrated, and thus the words of Allah: ‘Indeed he saw him on another descent, at the Lote Tree of the Furthest Boundary, near it is the Garden…’ (53:13-15).”
