12 – The ḥadīth of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd
It is transmitted through several routes.
The first chain comes from Mālik ibn Mighwāl, through al-Zubayr ibn ʿAdī, through Ṭalḥah, through Murrah, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was carried on the Night Journey, he was brought to the Lote-Tree of the Ultimate Limit (Sidrat al-Muntahā), which is in the sixth heaven⦗1⦘. Up to it ascends whatever rises from the earth, and from it those things are taken; and down to it descends whatever comes from above, and from it those things are taken.
He recited: “when the Lote-Tree was covered by that which covered it” (Qur’an 53:16). He said: “It was covered by golden moths.”
(1) I remark that its plain sense conflicts with Anas’s earlier report: “Then we ascended to the seventh heaven … then I was taken to the sidrat al-muntaha (the Lote-Tree of the Utmost Boundary),” which locates the tree in the seventh heaven—a view preferred by al-Qurtubi. Ibn Hajar reconciled the two reports by explaining that the tree’s origin is in the sixth heaven and that only the very base of its trunk remains there, while the rest rises into the seventh.
I add that this reconciliation is supported by the mursal narration recorded by Ibn Jarir, 27/55, from Qatadah: “A lote-tree whose furthest limit was shown to me in the seventh heaven.” Its chain of transmission is sound.
