They asked, “To where?” He replied, “To Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem).”
They said, “And then you were back among us this morning?!” He said, “Yes.”
At this, some began clapping, while others put their hands on their heads in astonishment at what they considered an outrageous lie.
They said, “If that is so, can you describe the mosque for us?”—and among them were men who had travelled to that land and seen the mosque.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “So I started to describe it, and I kept describing until some parts of the description became unclear to me—then the mosque was brought before my very eyes until it was set down near the house of ʿIqal—or: ʿAqīl—so I went on describing it while looking at it.” He added, “There was another feature that I did not retain.”
The people said, “As for the description, by Allah, he has indeed spoken accurately.”
Reported by Ahmad 1/309 and al-Tabarani 12782 with a sound chain. Al-Suyuti also attributed it in al-Khasaʾis 1/400 to Ibn Abi Shaybah, and it is likewise narrated by al-Nasa’i, al-Bazzar, and Abu Nuʿaym with a sound chain, while al-Hafiz graded it good in Fath 7/199.
