So I withdrew and sat apart, weighed down with sorrow. The enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl, passed by, came over, and sat with me. In a mocking tone he asked, “Has something happened?” I replied, “Yes.”
He said, “What was it?”
I answered, “I was taken on a night journey.”
He asked, “To where?”
I said, “To Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem).”
He said, “And then you were back among us this morning?” I replied, “Yes.”
Realizing that he could not brand me a liar lest I repeat the account before my people and leave him unable to deny it, he said, “If I gather your people, will you relate to them what you have just told me?” I said, “Yes.”
He called out, “Come, O clan of Banū Kaʿb ibn Luʾayy!” He kept shouting until the people in their assemblies sprang up, came over, and sat around the two of us.
He then said, “Tell your people what you have just told me.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Last night I was taken on a night journey.”
