“I saw—on the night I was carried on the Night Journey—Moses, the son of ʿImrān, a tall man of brown complexion with curly hair, looking as though he were one of the men of Shanūʾah. I also saw Jesus, a man of medium stature, fair with a rosy hue and straight hair. And I saw Mālik, the keeper of Hellfire, and the Antichrist.”
These were among the signs that Allah showed him: “So do not be in doubt about meeting him” (al-Sajdah 32:23)—indeed, he saw Moses and met him on the night he was taken up.
Al-Bukhārī recorded it (3239) with this wording; Muslim (267) contains the first additional phrase; Aḥmad 1/245 and 1/259; and Ibn Jarīr 21/112, which includes the other addition—Muslim also transmits it in Qatādah’s exegesis without an isnād to Ibn ʿAbbās, and it likewise appears with al-Bayhaqī as cited in Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr. There he adds: “And We made him a guide for the Children of Israel,” meaning that Allah made Moses a guide for the Children of Israel. This is one of Ibn Jarīr’s versions.
