Then he took me by the hand and ascended with me to the lowest heaven. When we reached it, Gabriel said to the keeper of that heaven, “Open.” He asked, “Who is this?” “Gabriel,” he replied. The keeper said, “Is anyone with you?” He answered, “Yes, Muhammad ﷺ is with me.” He asked, “Has he been summoned?” “Yes,” Gabriel said, so the gate was opened.

[He said: m] Once the gate was opened, we rose into the lowest heaven and there was a man seated, with groups on his right and groups on his left. Whenever he looked to his right he laughed, and whenever he looked to his left he wept. He said, “Welcome, righteous Prophet and righteous son.”

I asked Gabriel, “Who is this?” ⦗1⦘ He said, “This is Adam, and these groups on his right and his left are the souls of his offspring. Those on his right are the people of Paradise, while the groups on his left are the people of the Fire; so when he looks to his right he laughs, and when he looks to his left he weeps.”

Then he ascended with me to the second heaven and said to its keeper, “Open.” The keeper said the same as the first one had said, and he opened.
