- The narration of Anas ibn Mālik
It has reached us from him through several routes, with his students differing over its chain in the following manner:
- Al-Zuhrī transmits it from him, from Abū Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him).
- Qatādah transmits it from him, from Mālik ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah (may Allah be pleased with him).
- Sharik ibn Abī Namr and Thābit al-Bunnānī transmit it from him directly—without any intermediary—from the Prophet ﷺ.
In the wording of each of these three routes there are details not found in the others, as al-Ḥāfiẓ [Ibn Ḥajar] noted in Fatḥ al-Bārī 1/460.
Let us therefore quote the version preserved by each of them, so that we can later gather whatever additional particulars they contain—provided the reports are sound. I say:
- Al-Zuhrī, from Anas, said: Abū Dharr used to relate that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The roof of my house in Mecca was split open, whereupon Gabriel descended, split open my chest, washed it with the water of Zamzam, then brought a golden basin filled with wisdom and faith, poured it into my chest, and sealed it back together.”
