He likewise attributes it elsewhere (7/199) to al-Bayhaqī in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah with the wording: “Yes, indeed—I believe him in matters far greater than this; I believe him regarding the tidings of heaven.” Because of that he was called al-Ṣiddīq.
ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jazarī narrated—through ʿAṭāʾ, from Jābir—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“On the night I was taken on the Night Journey I passed by Gabriel in the Highest Assembly; he was like a worn-out ḥils (saddle-cloth) out of awe of Allah.”
Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim recorded it in al-Sunnah, 621 (in my edition and others) with a good chain, and it appears in al-Ṣaḥīḥah, 2289. Al-Suyūṭī (1/393) also traced it to Ibn Mardawayh and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsat, declared its chain sound, and in al-Durr (4/152) he added:
“In another wording recorded by Ibn Mardawayh: ‘I passed by Gabriel in the fourth heaven, and he looked like a threadbare ḥils out of fear of Allah.’”
