4 – The ḥadith of Buraydah ibn al-Ḥuṣayb al-Aslamī
It is transmitted by Abū Tamīlah from al-Zubayr ibn Junādah, from Ibn Buraydah, from his father. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“On the night I was taken on the Night Journey, Gabriel came to the Rock in Jerusalem, placed his finger in it, pierced it, and tied the Buraq to it.”
Al-Tirmidhī recorded it (3132), as did Ibn Ḥibbān (34 in al-Mawārid), al-Ḥākim (2/360), and al-Bazzār—whose wording is reproduced here. Al-Bazzār commented: “We do not know of anyone who related it from al-Zubayr ibn Junādah except Abū Tamīlah, and we do not know this ḥadith except through Buraydah.”
I say: Al-Tirmidhī classified it as “gharīb,” that is, weak—most likely on account of al-Zubayr ibn Junādah, for no one declared him reliable except Ibn Ḥibbān, whose leniency in accreditation is well known. Abū Ḥātim said, “A shaykh who is not well-known.” For this reason al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar noted in al-Taqrīb: “maqbūl (acceptable).” Al-Dhahabī, however, wrote in al-Mīzān: “Ibn Ḥibbān listed him among the trustworthy, and the one who claimed he is unknown was mistaken.”
