Its transmitters are trustworthy and well-known with the exception of this al-Mughira, yet a number of reliable narrators—not only Hisham—have narrated from him; you will find their names in al-Jarh 8/220/991. Ibn Hibban also included him in al-Thiqat. Accordingly, the hadith is authentic through this route. Praise be to Allah, by whose grace righteous deeds come to completion.
Al-Haythami cited it in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid 7/276 with the same wording and remarked:
“In one version it states, ‘Their tongues are shorn with shears of fire—or, he said, of iron.’
In another version: ‘On the night I was taken up I reached the lowest heaven and there I saw men whose tongues and lips were being cut off…,’ and the report continues in that vein.”
All of these versions were transmitted in full by Abu Yaʿla, in part by al-Bazzar, and by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat; one of Abu Yaʿla’s chains consists of the transmitters used in the two Sahihs. He overlooked the fact that the first version is also found in Ahmad’s Musnad.
