For when a person relies upon Allah alone in all his religious and worldly affairs, shunning everything besides Him, his devotion is sound and his relationship with Allah becomes sincere.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728 AH) said, “No one ever placed his hope in a created being or depended on him without his expectation being disappointed …” End quote.
Tawakkul upon Allah is one of the loftiest stations implied by the verse, “You alone we worship and You alone we seek help from.” Perfect tawḥīd in all three of its categories can be realized only through perfect reliance on Allah—glorified is He. Allah the Exalted says, “Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Trustee.” 1 The verses commanding tawakkul are exceedingly numerous. He also says, “Whoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him; surely Allah brings His command to pass.” 2
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751 AH), commenting on the words of the Exalted, “And put your trust in Allah, if you are believers,” 3 said, “Thus Allah made reliance upon Him a condition of faith, which indicates that faith is negated when tawakkul is absent.”
The stronger a servant’s faith becomes, the stronger his tawakkul will be; when faith weakens, tawakkul weakens, and if tawakkul is feeble, it is inevitably a sign of feeble faith.
In many passages of His Book, Allah pairs tawakkul with worship, with faith, with piety, with Islam, and with guidance. It therefore becomes clear that tawakkul is the root of every station of faith and excellence and of every act of Islam; its status among them is like that of the head to the body—just as the head cannot remain upright without the body, so too faith, its stations, and its deeds cannot stand without the supporting pillar of tawakkul.
Allah has made reliance upon Him one of the most conspicuous traits of the believers. He says, “The believers are only those who—when Allah is mentioned—their hearts tremble; when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.” 4 In other words, they depend on Him alone.
